Cầu Chương Dương is a famous bridge that connects Hoan Kiem with the rest of the surrounding districts like  Long Bien and Gia Lam. It is a conduit for trade and livelihood. To me, this bridge significies a bridge to life for many Vietnamese.  However, the psychological threshold that one needs to overcome to live in Hoan Kiem and move to Gia Lam is a huge one though the real physical distance is just a few kilometres apart. However, the thought of having to pass through a bridge to cross the red river that separates Hoan Kiem and Long Bien seems too cumbersome.  Today, millions of Vietnamese cross this bridge daily to go to the otherside to work.  In the evening, as they ride their motorbikes to return home to their loved ones, the view of the setting sun warms their tired body and assures them with the whisper "Home at Last!"

This painting "Home at Last" is my hope and prayer for the Vietnamese people that they too will know that they have a loving Father in Heaven that watches over their going in and going out.  A God that is loving that welcomes them, just as they are tired, broken and needing rest; Home at Last!

  • Home at Last

“Home at Last” evokes a powerful image on multiple levels – the physical journey across Chương Dương bridge, the emotional homecoming, and the spiritual yearning for a divine embrace. The painting captures the daily rhythm of countless Hanoians. Chương Dương bridge, a vein of trade and livelihood, becomes a symbol of toil and perseverance. The setting sun paints the sky in warm hues, mirroring the weariness in the riders' bodies. "Home at Last" isn't just about the physical arrival. It's about the relief of shedding the day's burdens, reuniting with family, and finding solace in familiar surroundings. The painting whispers of shared meals, laughter echoes, and stories whispered in the soft glow of evening. Chương Dương as a metaphorical bridge depicts the connection between the created and the Creator.  A Creator God who is loving that welcomes us, just as we are, tired, broken and needing rest. It transcends being a mere depiction of a daily commute. It becomes a testament to the human spirit's resilience, the power of hope, and the universal yearning for belonging, both earthly and divine.  "Home at Last" becomes a prayer, a wish for all to find solace in the divine embrace, not as perfect beings, but as children returning to a loving Father.
